Coast to Coast: Listening to the North

Current is a single work, roughly 4.5 metres wide, grown from more than twenty one-to-one listening conversations across the North. Each person was drawn from life, held in a torn-paper landscape of blue and gold. A project about being heard, and the quiet marks a place leaves on us.

Supported by People’s Powerhouse, Arts Council England and The National Lottery Community Fund.

UNRAVELLING

Acrylic and 22k gold leaf on canvas. A spiral of figures turns around a single point of gold light. The gilding follows the Kintsugi idea that fracture can be made luminous rather than hidden, gold as a way of marking what has lived, moved and been remade.

何 曉 雯

Hong Kong born, Manchester based. My work explores the psychological states we carry but rarely speak — longing, stillness, grief, resilience — encoded in the human figure and the symbolic objects that hold our inner lives. A sacred heart, a crown of thorns, a sleeping form: each carries emotional weight that crosses cultures and time.

Inspired by her favourite artist Gustav Klimt, gold becomes both surface and depth — a language for beauty inseparable from longing, ornament inseparable from emotion.

Art, for me, is a form of connection. Through live portrait drawing, I meet people face to face — reading their presence, translating something true into line and light. Every portrait is a small conversation, caught in a moment of golden attention.

Let's create something golden
